Occupational therapy is a widely recognized, science-driven, evidence-based profession. Boston University is leading the profession to this point.
Dr. Elsie Vergara, Keynote Speaker
This year’s annual Lead the Way Symposium features keynote speaker, Dr. Elsie Vergara. Dr. Vergara’s address is entitled Promoting Emerging Areas of OT in Countries with Limited Resources: What Should Be Our Role? Dr. Vergara has traveled extensively, advancing pediatric occupational therapy practice, particularly in Latin America. Most recently, she spent seven weeks as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Sydney consulting on postgraduate curricular development. She is a well-regarded leader in the areas of international practice, cultural sensitivity, and occupational justice. She will share the challenges she has encountered while promoting the development of neonatal practice in various countries, the greatest of which has been balancing the "expert" role with the need to ensure her recommendations are culturally appropriate, therefore likely to be implemented. Successful, and not so successful, strategies will be discussed.
Student Presentations
Symposium presentations will include evidence summaries by our online post-professional Master of Science students in the areas of early intervention, sensory integration, hand therapy, and adult mental health and physical rehabilitation. Our online Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (OTD) students will present synopses of their doctoral projects and our faculty will present their research and moderate concurrent sessions. This year’s Pi Theta Epsilon (PTE) members will present an interactive workshop entitled Going Steady: Falls Prevention.
